Types of Prepositions

There are eight types of Prepositions

Prepositions of Time
Prepositions of Place
Prepositions of Movement
Prepositions of Manner
Prepositions of Agent or Instrument
Prepositions of Measure
Prepositions of Source
Prepositions of Possession

Prepositions Of time: are used when there is a need to indicate when a particular event happened. Examples: In, On, At, Since, For, During. 

Example in a sentence
  • I have been studying in the morning.
  • She was born on 5th of March.
  • I will reach there at 11 o’clock.


Prepositions of place illustrate the location of nouns or pronouns in a sentence. Examples: In, On, Between, Behind, Under, Over, Near. 

Example in a sentence
  • The squirrel is on the tree.
  • Jean and Sam live near their workplace.
  • Joseph is not in his room.


Prepositions of movement describe the movement of one noun or pronoun towards another noun or pronoun. Examples: to, into, towards, through etc.

Example in a sentence
  • Sarah went to the drug store.
  • The kids jumped into the pool.
  • The bull was coming towards us.


Prepositions of manner describe the way or means by which something happened or happens, when used in a sentence. Examples: On, In, With, By, Like 

Example in a sentence
  • We go to work by bus.
  • I came here in a taxi.
  • The little girl speaks like an old woman.


Prepositions of agent or instrument indicate that an action conducted on a noun is caused by another noun, when used in a sentence. Example: by, with.

Example in a sentence
  • This poem was written by Shakespeare.
  • My aunt could not open the door with that key.
  • Susan is writing note with her red pen.


Prepositions of measure connect the quantity of the noun with the noun itself, when used in a sentence. Examples: of, by.

Example in a sentence
  • I bought a litter of milk today.
  • Half of the students were present in the class.
  • This restaurant sells pizza by the yard.


Prepositions of source convey that one noun or pronoun has originated from another noun or pronoun in the sentence. Examples: from, by.

Example in a sentence
  • The planets receive light from the Sun.
  • This poem was not written by me.
  • He did the favor from gratitude.


Prepositions of possession indicate that one noun or pronoun owns another noun or pronoun in the sentence. Examples: in, with, of.

Example in a sentence
  • I met an attractive woman with red hair today.
  • My brother has no money on him.
  • He is not a man of wealth.
